Tradition and Elegance: The Story of the Iconic AC Milan Shirt

If you are passionate about football you have clearly heard about AC Milan, the Italian team that is in first positions in Serie A next to Juventus, Inter Milan and so on. In the old days a shirt from a football kit was just a piece of equipment that the players wore during the match to represent their team or their country but over the years it became also a fashion icon. A lot of teenagers use a football shirt to match their outfit while also showing support towards the team. The AC Milan shirt has a cool design with red and black stripes that go well in a lot of clothes combinations.

Explaining the Logo on the AC Milan Shirt

The logo of AC Milan is the symbol of the famous football team and its meaning is their history contained in a graphic illustration. Here are the elements of the logo on AC Milan Shirt:

  • Its colours are red and black. These two colours represent the identity of the club because red symbolizes passion and the dedication while the black colour symbolizes the strength. These colours are the same since the day the club was founded.
  • Moving on to the shape and its design. They usually use the shape of a shield symbolizing protection (or to be more specific, an oval shape) and as the overall design it is a combination of red, black and white. Inside the oval is a circle which is divided in two halves, one with black and red stripes and one with a red cross on a white background. This whole circle is on a white background as well and on top of it is written ACM while below the circle is written 1899.
  • The red cross mentioned above symbolizes the flag of Milan city. This cross is an emblem of the city and is used in the design to show the connection between the club and its origins.
  • ACM is the abbreviation of Associazione Calcio Milan, the official name of the club.
  • 1899 is the year AC Milan was founded and marks its beginnings.

ESPN comes with the reason why the club has these colours ‘Milan's red-and-black colors come from club founder Herbert Kilpin, an Englishman who moved to Italy in 1891, where he maintained and serviced textile machinery. In 1899, he and other English expats founded the Milan Football and Cricket Club. His choice of colors was inspired by Notts Olympic, his first club back home in Nottingham, explaining that red would represent the "fire of the Milanese devils" and black would symbolize the "fear in the hearts" of the opponents. They've been I Rossoneri (The Red and Blacks) ever since.

The logo of AC Milan is complex and full of meaning, combining the history of the club, its beginnings and its origins showing a lot of pride by that.

From the First Shirt to the Modern Ones

The AC Milan shirt had an evolution over the years because the first kit ever was a little clumsy, as any other team kits were because the technology wasn’t that innovative and even the materials used were quite different. But with all the changes in texture and design, the colours never changed. The first AC Milan kit was probably the most uncomfortable one because it was a shirt with collar and long sleeves in red and black stripes. The logo was not completely there back in 1899, but they still had the red cross on the shirt’s pocket.

Since 1912 the club kit started to use T-shirts instead of shirts to allow the players to be more comfortable while playing and in 1962 they invented the away kit where they included the white version of an AC Milan shirt. Today there are different kits, but the main ones are the home kit and the away kit. The home kit is the one with red and black stripes and the away kit is white with red details. But the most important thing is the evolution of texture, materials and comfort. The materials used these days are more breathable and loose allowing the players to move freely while they play.

The AC Milan Shirt over the Years: Legendary Moments

Everybody knows that AC Milan has a great history in football and a lot of legends put on the club’s shirt such as Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta, Ronaldinho, Zlatan Imbrahimovic and so on. Over the years the AC Milan kit was a witness at the most famous moments in football history including victories in Serie A and Champions League. For example, when AC Milan won the Champions League in 2003 against Juventus the players like Paolo Maldini, mentioned previously, and Andriy Shevchenko posed with pride and happiness in ACM shirts, the moments being immortalized in amazing pictures that are viral until this day.

On Wikipedia it is mentioned that the away kit is a lucky one ‘Milan's away kit has always been completely white, sometimes adorned with various types of decorations, the most common of which are one vertical or horizontal red and black stripe. The white away kit is considered by both the fans and the club to be a lucky strip in Champions League finals, due to the fact that Milan has won six finals out of eight in an all white strip (losing only to Ajax in 1995 and Liverpool in 2005), and only won one out of three in the home strip.

Conclusion

The AC Milan shirt is a mix of history, tradition and elegance. Even though the design has changed over the years, the base colours are still the same to hold the tradition with a lot of pride. Nowadays the club’s shirt is famous because of the legendary moments the club had in history, and the teenagers use it as a fashion icon in their daily outfits. This way they can show the support they have for their favourite team while also being well dressed.
