Traveling is one of the best things you can do in this life. You get to experience new cultures, you get to see the places you once dreamt of seeing, and you get to experience a life that you never did before. Traveling is amazing! When comparing the prices of luxury luggage with budget-friendly options, the latter might look more appealing, but the benefits that come with premium luggage are endless.
They offer durability, they provide security and, with a stylish and visually appealing design, they are sure to make you stand out – in the best way. However, is luxury luggage worth the money? Should you invest in a high-quality piece or should you stick with conventional bags? Read this article to find out.
Let’s start with what’s most important. You don’t want your bag to rip at the seams and expose all of your belongings on the airport’s floor. We’ve all seen the way in which airport personnel handle the bags; you need something that can withstand that and the constant throwing around from one plane to another.
Premium luggage is often made from high-quality materials, such as
● Full-Grain Leather
● Aluminum
● Carbon fiber
● Waxed Canvas
Longevity is a key aspect in the design of these bags, which is why respectable brands prioritize the use of premium materials.
Budget-friendly options, while more cost-efficient, are often made from polyester, ABS plastic or other lower-grade materials such as polycarbonate. That makes it more prone to wear and tear. If you travel often and, if you don’t want to have to change bags every few trips, then you should invest in more expensive options.
Premium luggage is known for its visually appealing looks. They are sleek and modern, they incorporate smart features that make traveling easy and include TSA-approved locks so you can fly through those airport checks.
Because high-end options are designed with the user in mind, they often include built-in power banks, they have expendable compartments and the materials they use are often water-proof to ensure convenience.
FUN FACT: did you know leather is also water-resistant? While they are not water-impermeable, due to their porous nature, they can withstand small amounts of water just fine.
The budget options often copy some of the features brought forward by the luxury luggage, but they lack the craftsmanship and attention to detail that premium luggage has. This, unfortunately, leads to the selling of mediocre products that, although great in theory, fail to deliver.
Security is not that important when it comes to bags – unless they’re traveling bags. When it comes to travelling bags, security is probably the second most important thing you might want, after durability. That is because you place important belongings in the bag and that bag goes through the hands of many, many people.
Not only that, but security in general is a hot topic at airports. Depending on where you’re flying, there might be certain criteria imposed by the country you’re traveling to or from. Luxury luggage is usually designed with this aspect in mind. They feature reinforced zippers, impact-resistant shells and other specific security measures that help you travel more easily and safely.
Budget-friendly options, on the other hand, are more generic. They don’t include smart features to protect your bag while on the road (or in the sky) and they don’t have the materials needed to ensure your bag’s safety.
Imagine you get off the plane, car, boat or whatever you’re traveling by, and the next thing you have to do before you get to your destination and get to relax, is to grab your bag and go on your way. Nothing bad so far, right? Now imagine that bag is heavy, uncomfortable to carry, they come without wheels and they are incredibly loud. Suddenly, this small thing you had to do becomes a nuisance that gets you even more tired.
If you want to avoid that scenario, the best thing you can do is invest in premium luggage. High-end bags make it so that you don’t even know you’re carrying your belongings around. They use comfortable materials and ergonomic designs that also look stylish and they are lightweight. That’s crucial if you’re traveling long distances and have multiple layovers. If your luxury luggage has wheels, they are most likely high-quality, silent ones. Bonus points if they come in a set of four.
Budget-friendly options are usually limited to a set of two wheels to save on the costs. That’s important to know because a set of four wheels ensures a far smoother roll. Not just that but, if all the weight of the luggage, including the bag itself, is resting and reliant on two wheels, that can lead to premature wear and tear of the wheels.
Handles are also not that great. They’re wobbly and they often get stuck, which makes fitting your bag in certain spaces impossible. In an airplane, that might end up costing you a lot. You also run the risk of paying an extra fee if the weight of the luggage, not just that of your belongings, brings your overall checked baggage over the limit.
We can’t possibly compare premium and budget luggage without addressing the matter of money. Obviously, luxury luggage will be more expensive. From materials to features, everything is more costly when it comes to the making of the more expensive ones, which inevitably, raises the final cost of the product.
Budget-friendly options, on the other hand, are able to provide people with a lower alternative because they do not have the costs high-end brands have. Making an entire bag out of full-grain leather is a completely different thing from making a bag out of canvas and nylon. Obviously, the prices are going to differ and, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, if you want premium luggage, you pay the price for it.
